Peninsula and Oriental (P&O) Steam Navigation Company officer quality gilt button, 23mm, original example of British merchant marine uniform insignia associated with the Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company.
Manufactured in gilt metal, this 23mm officer-quality uniform button bears the distinctive emblem of the Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company, better known as P&O. Worn on the uniforms of the company’s officers, buttons of this quality reflected the prestige of one of Britain’s most influential shipping companies and formed an important part of its smart maritime dress regulations.
Founded in 1837, P&O developed from a mail packet service operating between Britain, the Iberian Peninsula, and the Mediterranean into one of the world’s leading shipping companies. Throughout the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, the company operated extensive passenger and cargo services linking Britain with India, the Far East, Australia, Africa, and other parts of the British Empire. P&O vessels became synonymous with long-distance ocean travel, luxury liners, and dependable mail services.
During both the First World War and World War II, many P&O ships were requisitioned for military service as troopships, hospital ships, and armed merchant cruisers. Officers and crews served with distinction in often hazardous conditions, transporting troops, equipment, and supplies across global theatres of war while facing the constant threat of enemy submarines, mines, and aircraft.
Officer-quality gilt buttons were manufactured to a higher standard than ordinary uniform fittings, with finely detailed die-struck designs and a rich gilt finish. Original examples remain highly sought after by collectors of maritime memorabilia, merchant navy insignia, and shipping company artefacts, particularly those from renowned firms such as P&O.
Manufactured in gilt metal and retaining its original shank fitting to the reverse, this example represents an authentic and attractive piece of British maritime history.
