Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders officer’s uniform button, dating from the Victorian period between the regiment’s redesignation in 1881 and the accession of King Edward VII in 1901. The regiment, descended from the 79th Regiment of Foot, had received the title Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders in 1873. It retained its distinctive Highland identity, with the Cameron of Erracht tartan and traditional Scottish regimental insignia. The Victorian-era button represents the regiment before the introduction of the King’s Crown pattern in 1902 and is an interesting example of late nineteenth-century British Army uniform insignia.
The button measures approximately 19mm in diameter and is manufactured in gilt brass for officers’ uniforms. Its design incorporates the crowned thistle, the principal regimental emblem, surrounded by the title “THE QUEEN’S OWN CAMERON HIGHLANDERS”. The thistle and crown reflect the regiment’s Scottish identity and royal association. Officer buttons were generally produced to a higher standard than other ranks’ examples, with gilt metal being a characteristic material for officers’ dress uniform. This pattern is particularly suitable for collections of Victorian military buttons, Scottish Highland regimental insignia and Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders militaria.
