Royal Welch Fusiliers officer quality button (1920–2006 pattern), 26mm, original example of British Army regimental uniform insignia associated with the Royal Welch Fusiliers.
Manufactured in brass to officer quality, this 26mm uniform button bears the distinctive regimental device of the Royal Welch Fusiliers, finely die-struck to the high standard expected of officers’ privately purchased uniform fittings. Worn on service dress, mess dress, and ceremonial uniforms, buttons of this pattern remained in use from 1920 until the regiment’s amalgamation in 2006.
The Royal Welch Fusiliers was originally raised in 1689 as one of the oldest infantry regiments in the British Army. Recruiting principally from North Wales, the regiment earned an exceptional reputation through more than three centuries of service, participating in campaigns including the War of the Spanish Succession, the American Revolutionary War, the Napoleonic Wars, the Crimean War, the Second Boer War, the First World War, and World War II.
The regiment was renowned for preserving its historic spelling of “Welch” rather than the modern “Welsh”, maintaining numerous long-standing customs and traditions that distinguished it from other infantry regiments. In 2006, following the restructuring of the infantry, the Royal Welch Fusiliers merged with the Royal Regiment of Wales to form the Royal Welsh, bringing to a close over 300 years of independent regimental history.
Manufactured in brass, possibly originally gilt and retaining its original reverse shank fitting, this example represents an authentic and collectable piece of British regimental history.
