The Republic of Korea War Service Medal was established by South Korea in 1951 to recognise the contribution and sacrifices of United Nations military personnel who served during the Korean War. The conflict began on 25 June 1950 and continued until the armistice of 27 July 1953. The medal was originally offered to participating forces during the conflict, with a renewed offer later allowing eligible veterans from countries including the United States and Australia to receive and wear the award. Modern issues are of interest to collectors of Korean War medals, United Nations campaign awards and twentieth-century military decorations.
The medal commemorates service in the defence of the Republic of Korea against North Korean forces and their allies. It is associated with eligible service in Korea, its territorial waters or airspace during the recognised wartime period. The modern issue should be distinguished from other awards connected with the conflict, particularly the United States Korean Service Medal and the United Nations Service Medal for Korea, which are separate decorations.
