Royal Air Force (RAF) No. 1 Parachute Training School gilt and enamel brooch badge, King’s Crown, an original badge associated with the Royal Air Force and No. 1 Parachute Training School.
Manufactured in gilt metal with coloured enamel, this attractive brooch badge bears the insignia of No. 1 Parachute Training School beneath the King’s Crown, identifying it as a pre-1953 example produced during the reign of George VI. Fitted with a brooch pin to the reverse, badges of this type were intended for wear on civilian clothing and were often purchased as personal keepsakes by serving personnel or presented to family members in recognition of service.
No. 1 Parachute Training School was established during the Second World War to provide parachute instruction for RAF personnel and, later, members of the British Army’s airborne forces. Based initially at RAF Ringway, the school became the birthplace of British military parachuting, training thousands of parachutists for operational service. Personnel completed an intensive course culminating in a series of successful parachute descents before earning the coveted parachute qualification.
The school played a pivotal role in the development of Britain’s airborne capability, training members of the Parachute Regiment, Glider Pilot Regiment, Special Air Service, and Commonwealth airborne units. Graduates went on to serve in major operations, including Sicily, Normandy, Arnhem, and the Rhine crossing, establishing an enduring reputation for courage and professionalism.
King’s Crown examples of No. 1 Parachute Training School badges are particularly desirable, representing the formative years of British airborne forces before the introduction of Queen’s Crown insignia following the accession of Queen Elizabeth II in 1952.
Manufactured in gilt metal with enamel detail and retaining its original brooch fitting to the reverse, this example represents an attractive and highly collectable piece of British airborne memorabilia.
