Royal Navy officer’s gilt button (1902–1952 pattern), 17mm, original example of British naval uniform insignia associated with the Royal Navy.

Manufactured in gilt metal, this 17mm officer’s uniform button features the traditional fouled anchor surmounted by the King’s Crown, identifying it as the pattern worn from 1902 until 1952. This design remained in service throughout the reigns of Edward VII, George V, Edward VIII, and George VI, making it one of the longest-serving Royal Navy button patterns.

Officer’s buttons of this size were worn on a variety of Royal Navy uniforms, including service dress, reefer jackets, greatcoats, and mess dress, depending on the garment. Manufactured to a high standard by leading military outfitters, gilt buttons were an essential element of an officer’s uniform and reflected the Royal Navy’s long-established traditions of smartness and professionalism.

This pattern accompanied Royal Navy officers through some of the most significant naval conflicts of the twentieth century, including the First World War and World War II. Officers wearing these buttons served in every major theatre of naval operations, from the Battle of Jutland and the Battle of the Atlantic to the Mediterranean, Arctic Convoys, the Normandy landings, and the Pacific campaign.

Following the accession of Elizabeth II in 1952, the King’s Crown was replaced by the St Edward’s Crown, resulting in a revised button pattern. Consequently, the 1902–1952 design represents the final King’s Crown pattern worn by Royal Navy officers and is highly regarded by collectors of British naval insignia.

Manufactured in gilt metal and retaining its original reverse shank fitting, this example represents an authentic and collectable piece of Royal Navy uniform history.
