S. Nigeria 1905-06 clasp face – a contemporary tailor’s copy, period-made replacement face plate for the Africa General Service (AGS) Medal campaign clasp.
This contemporary tailor’s copy faithfully reproduces the front face of the “S. Nigeria 1905-06” clasp issued with the Africa General Service Medal. Unlike modern reproductions, these period-made tailor’s copies were manufactured during or shortly after the Edwardian period by military outfitters for wear on uniforms, replacement of damaged clasp components, or completion of privately mounted medal groups. Today, they are recognised by collectors as historic artefacts in their own right, reflecting early twentieth-century military tailoring and medal mounting practices.
The original S. Nigeria 1905-06 clasp was awarded to officers and men of the West African Frontier Force, the British Army, and other supporting colonial forces who served during military operations in the Southern Nigeria Protectorate between 1905 and 1906. These operations formed part of Britain’s continuing efforts to establish effective colonial administration, suppress local resistance, and secure British authority across the region.
Campaigns were conducted through dense tropical rainforest, swamps, rivers, and difficult interior terrain, requiring highly mobile columns of British officers and African troops. Expeditions were mounted against communities resisting colonial rule, with forces establishing military posts, protecting communications, and extending government control throughout Southern Nigeria. The operations reflected the changing nature of Britain’s colonial military commitments in West Africa during the early twentieth century.
As this example is the clasp face only, it represents the engraved front plate that would originally have been fitted to the clasp body. Original clasp faces are considerably scarcer than complete clasps, having often been separated during repairs, alterations, or restoration work over many decades. They are particularly sought after by collectors restoring original medals or assembling specialist collections of campaign medal components.
