South African Prison Service uniform button of the pre-1925 pattern, associated with early prison administration during the colonial and Union of South Africa period. This 25mm button features the service’s recognised device in clear relief, incorporating the King’s crown with surrounding inscription “Prisons Gevangenissen” denoting the Prison Service, all executed in white metal consistent with official uniform fittings of the era.
The crown motif reflects governance under the British Crown before later administrative changes in South Africa, while the overall design follows traditional civil service button styles used across government departments in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Buttons of this type were worn by prison warders and officials as part of formal and service dress, providing clear identification of departmental affiliation.
Manufactured in white metal with a loop shank fitting to the reverse, this example provides a representative piece of early South African institutional insignia. South African Prison Service buttons are collected as examples of colonial-era memorabilia, law enforcement and correctional service insignia, and historical uniform components.
