An original and scarce collar badge for the Volunteer Battalions of the Derbyshire Regiment, also known as the Sherwood Foresters, dating to the c.1881–1901 pattern period during the Victorian era.
This finely detailed badge is struck in white metal and features a laurel wreath with a hart at its centre, encircled by the Maltese cross with scrolls reading “Sherwood Foresters, Derbyshire”, surmounted by the Queen Victoria Crown (QVC). The design is consistent with the volunteer battalion insignia of the Childers Reforms period, when the county regiments were established, and volunteer battalions were incorporated as auxiliary forces.
Reverse fittings typically consist of east-west copper lugs, intended for wear in facing pairs on the collar of the volunteer’s tunic. These badges were worn by members of the volunteer force. The Derbyshire Regiment was retitled as the Sherwood Foresters (Notts and Derby Regiment) in 1902, making this badge representative of a short transitional period.
Condition: Very Good – Sharp detail with minor age wear; original lugs present and firm.
Dimensions: Approx. 32mm x 30mm
