An original example of a German Third Reich-era Non-Commissioned Officer’s Parade Sabel or Sabre, manufactured by E. & F. Hörster of Solingen and dated 1938, during the rearmament phase of the Nazi regime. This is the type of dress sword worn by NCOs of the Wehrmacht during parades and ceremonial duties prior to and during the Second World War.
The sword features a nickel-plated single-edged blade, measuring approximately 717mm, with a single fuller and a bright finish, clearly marked with a Waffenamt and “3” on either side of the spine of the ricasso. The hilt is of the standard brass “dove’s head” pommel design with integral backstrap, with a black celluloid grip wrapped in brass wire. The crossguard and integral knuckle guard are marked underneath with 2 Waffenamt stamps as well as with the serial number “2979” and makers mark “E&F.H. 38” (E. F. Horster, 1938). The finger loop is still present, but split. The trademark for Horster is present but covered by the escutcheon.
The sword retains its matching serial number and a black-painted steel scabbard, fitted with a single suspension ring and throat mount. Near the throat is marked on one side “E.&F.H. 38,” and Waffenamt stamped on one side, and on the reverse, the serial number “2979”. The chape is also Waffenamt stamped.
All matching Waffenamt stamps “WaA253”
