An original British 1842 Pattern socket bayonet, manufactured for use with the .75 calibre Brown Bess percussion musket. This pattern, introduced in the early Victorian period, features a triangular-section blade with fullers on two faces and a socket designed to fit over the musket barrel.
The blade has been marked but is hardly visible, and exhibits the correct stepped shoulders and straight profile associated with the 1842 pattern. The socket is marked “2 (??) / 4” on top and another “22” on the rim of the opening of the socket.
