South African Border Mounted Rifles uniform button, 19mm size, of the pattern worn from circa 1901 to the early years of the twentieth century. This button features the regiment’s recognised device in clear relief, incorporating a King’s crown surmounting the monogram “BMR”, all executed in WHITE metal consistent with colonial-era military uniform fittings.
The Border Mounted Rifles were raised in the Cape Colony during the period of the Second Boer War, serving as a mounted infantry unit responsible for frontier security and patrol duties. The crown motif reflects allegiance to the British Crown during this transitional period in South African military history, while the overall design follows established British military button styles of the era. Buttons of this type were worn on service and dress uniforms, forming an important element of regimental identity.
Manufactured in white metal with a loop shank fitting to the reverse, this example provides a well-defined representation of early twentieth-century colonial military insignia. Border Mounted Rifles buttons are collected as examples of Boer War-era memorabilia, mounted infantry history, and British Empire uniform components.
