Edwardian 1854 Pattern Scots Guards Officer’s Levee Sword, complete with scabbard, a fine example of a British Army dress sword manufactured during the reign of King Edward VII by the noted maker Pillin. This pattern follows the established 1854 design used by officers, distinguished by its elegant proportions and ceremonial function within full dress and levee attire.

The sword features a straight, finely polished blade etched with decorative panels, including royal cyphers, foliage, regimental motifs and battle honours associated with the Scots Guards, as well as a “Proved” disc with the letter “P” for Pillin and the serial number “105349” on the spine. The hilt is of the characteristic Gothic style, incorporating a pierced guard with the regimental insignia of the Scots Guards cap badge design, with a wire-bound grip providing both visual refinement and secure handling. The design reflects both the prestige of the Guards regiments and the formal requirements of court and ceremonial duties during the Edwardian period.

The 1854 Pattern levee sword was worn by officers for formal occasions rather than field service, symbolising rank, tradition, and regimental identity. Examples produced during the reign of Edward VII (1901–1910) are particularly associated with the early 20th-century British Army, a period marked by both imperial service and evolving military dress regulations.

This example retains its accompanying scabbard of steel construction, complementing the sword for display and preservation. As a matched set, it provides a complete representation of an officer’s dress accoutrement from the Edwardian era.

Manufactured with attention to detail and quality materials, swords by Pillin are well regarded among collectors for their craftsmanship and historical authenticity. Pieces of this type are sought after within British militaria collecting, particularly among those specialising in Guards regiments, edged weapons, and ceremonial arms.

Dimensions
Approx. 98cm overall length out of scabbard

Approx. 83cm overall blade length

Condition
Very good overall condition for its age, with clear blade etching and a reasonably well-preserved hilt. Some light wear to the etching and age-related marks to the exterior, consistent with service and polishing. The scabbard remains structurally sound with expected signs of light pitting. Unfortunately, the screws to the throat are absent; the rest of the scabbard is present. No significant damage or repairs noted.
