Australia Service Medal 1939–1945 – an unnamed original example of a Commonwealth campaign award instituted by the Government of Australia to recognise wartime service during World War II.

The medal features the crowned effigy of George VI on the obverse, while the reverse depicts the coat of arms of the Commonwealth of Australia surrounded by the words ‘THE AUSTRALIA SERVICE MEDAL 1939–1945’, reflecting the nation’s recognition of military and qualifying civilian wartime service. The medal is suspended from a distinctive ribbon consisting of a wide khaki central stripe, flanked by two narrow red stripes, with edge stripes of dark blue on the left and light blue on the right. The khaki represents the Army, and the red, dark blue and light blue represent the Mercantile Marine, Navy and Air Force, respectively.

Instituted in 1949, the Australia Service Medal was awarded to members of the Australian armed forces and certain civilian organisations who completed the qualifying period of service during the Second World War. It recognised both home and overseas service and became one of Australia’s principal awards for wartime participation.

Unlike many British campaign medals of the Second World War, examples of the Australia Service Medal were commonly issued named, making original, unnamed examples extremely rare. The medal remains an important part of Australian military honours and is widely collected for its connection to the service and sacrifice of Australian personnel during the war.
