Manufactured in gilt metal to officer quality, this 19mm uniform button bears the distinctive regimental device of the Gordon Highlanders and was worn on officers’ service dress, mess dress, and ceremonial uniforms. Privately purchased by officers, examples of this quality were manufactured to a higher standard than standard issue buttons, featuring finely struck detail and a rich gilt finish.

The Gordon Highlanders were formed in 1881 under the Childers Reforms through the amalgamation of the 75th (Stirlingshire) Regiment of Foot and the 92nd (Gordon Highlanders) Regiment of Foot. Recruiting primarily from the counties of north-east Scotland, the regiment inherited a proud Highland tradition and a distinguished record of service dating back to the late eighteenth century.

The regiment earned lasting fame during the Napoleonic Wars, particularly through the exploits of the 92nd Gordon Highlanders at the Battle of Waterloo. The regiment later served with distinction during the Crimean War, the Second Boer War, the First World War, and World War II, participating in campaigns across Europe, Africa, the Middle East, and Asia.

During the twentieth century, Gordon Highlanders officers wore buttons such as this example as part of the regiment’s distinctive uniform traditions. The regiment remained an independent Highland infantry regiment until 1994, when it amalgamated with the Queen’s Own Highlanders (Seaforth and Camerons) to form the Highlanders (Seaforth, Gordons and Camerons). Its heritage is now preserved within the Royal Regiment of Scotland.
