1879 Clasp Face – original silver face plate from the South Africa Medal 1877–1879 campaign clasp, an authentic Victorian component intended for medal restoration or specialist collecting.

Manufactured in silver, this original “1879” clasp face is the front section from the campaign clasp awarded with the South Africa Medal 1877–1879. The face plate bears the engraved campaign date “1879” and forms the visible portion of the clasp attached to the medal ribbon. This original component is ideal for collectors seeking authentic parts for medal restoration, conservation, or the study of Victorian campaign medals.

The 1879 clasp was awarded to officers and men of the British Army, Royal Navy, colonial forces, and locally raised units who served during the campaigns of 1879, most notably the Anglo-Zulu War. It commemorates service in one of Britain’s most famous nineteenth-century conflicts, including actions such as the Battles of Isandlwana, Rorke’s Drift, Kambula, Gingindlovu, and Ulundi.

As only the face plate is present, this piece represents the decorative front section of the clasp rather than a complete clasp assembly. Original clasp faces are considerably scarcer than complete clasps and are increasingly sought after by collectors undertaking sympathetic restorations of damaged or incomplete medal groups, or by those assembling reference collections of original Victorian medal components.

Original South Africa Medal components remain highly desirable due to their historical significance and direct association with the British campaigns in southern Africa. This example offers an authentic period component from one of the most recognisable campaign medals of Queen Victoria’s reign.

Dimensions

Approx. 36mm × 12mm

Condition

Good overall original condition, with clear “1879” lettering and an attractive age-related silver patina. Light wear, surface marks, and signs of previous fitting are present, consistent with an original clasp face removed from a medal. An excellent genuine Victorian component suitable for restoration, display, or specialist collecting.
