16th Air Assault Brigade colour formation patch, representing one of the British Army’s specialist airborne and air assault formations. The patch is associated with the 16th Air Assault Brigade, formed in 1999 through the amalgamation of elements of the 5th Airborne Brigade and the 24 Airmobile Brigade, and subsequently serving as the British Army’s principal air assault formation.
The patch features the distinctive airborne “screaming” eagle associated with British Army airborne forces, embroidered in colour on a fabric backing. The eagle is an established symbol of British airborne warfare and reflects the brigade’s role in rapid deployment, air assault and airborne operations. Colour formation patches such as this were worn as part of the formation identification insignia on British Army combat and service dress.
The 16th Air Assault Brigade has played an important role in British military operations since its formation, including deployments to Sierra Leone, Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as numerous exercises and overseas operations. Its insignia is consequently of interest to collectors of contemporary British Army militaria and modern airborne equipment.
This colour patch is particularly suitable for collectors of 16th Air Assault Brigade insignia, British Army patches, airborne forces badges, Parachute Regiment militaria, air assault equipment, modern British military insignia and contemporary British Army uniform items. It provides an identifiable example of the formation insignia associated with one of Britain’s principal rapid-reaction formations.
