The Battle of the Bulge began on 16 December 1944, when German forces launched a surprise offensive through the densely forested Ardennes region of Belgium and Luxembourg in a final attempt to divide the Allied armies and capture the vital port of Antwerp. American, British, Belgian, and other Allied troops fought under extreme winter conditions against determined German attacks, with fierce engagements taking place at locations including Bastogne, St Vith, and Houffalize.
Despite initial German successes, stubborn Allied resistance, particularly the defence of Bastogne by the 101st Airborne Division and other American units, combined with improving weather and overwhelming Allied air power, brought the offensive to a halt. By late January 1945, the German attack had been decisively defeated, exhausting Germany’s remaining offensive capability on the Western Front and hastening the end of the war in Europe.
