British Pattern 1913 Enfield Bayonet in Scabbard – Remington, March 1916

An original British Pattern 1913 (P13) Enfield bayonet, manufactured by Remington Arms Company and dated March 1916, complete with its original scabbard. Originally designed for the experimental Pattern 1913 Enfield rifle, the bayonet later found widespread service with the Pattern 1914 (P14) rifle and, following the United States’ entry into the First World War, became the basis for the American Model 1917 bayonet used with the M1917 rifle.

Manufactured in the United States by Remington Arms Company, this example features the distinctive long, single-edged blade with a broad central fuller and wooden grip scales secured by two screw bolts. The ricasso is clearly marked with the Remington manufacturer’s stamp together with the production date of March 1916, making it an excellent wartime-produced example. It is complete with its original steel-mounted leather scabbard, making for an increasingly scarce and desirable set.

The Pattern 1913 bayonet represents an important transitional design in British military edged weapons. Although the Pattern 1913 rifle itself was never adopted for general British service due to the outbreak of the First World War, large numbers of bayonets had already entered production. These were subsequently issued with the Pattern 1914 rifle, which saw extensive service with British forces as a sniper’s rifle and with rear-echelon units throughout the war. Many Pattern 1913 bayonets also remained in British stores and continued to see service during the Second World War with the Home Guard and training establishments.

Remington-manufactured examples are particularly sought after by collectors due to their direct association with wartime American production for the British government and their influence on the later U.S. Model 1917 bayonet. Complete examples retaining their original scabbards are increasingly difficult to obtain and remain highly desirable among collectors of First World War militaria, British bayonets, and military edged weapons.

Very good overall original condition, with age-related wear consistent with long-term storage, including minor pitting to the crossguard and tang. The blade retains clear Remington manufacturer’s markings and the March 1916 date stamp, with light staining and minor surface marks. The wooden grips remain secure, the locking mechanism functions correctly, and the original scabbard is complete with honest service wear. An excellent original First World War Pattern 1913 bayonet by one of the principal American wartime manufacturers.
