Cape Town Highlanders brass uniform button, representing one of South Africa’s oldest Scottish-pattern infantry regiments. The regiment was raised in Cape Town on 24 April 1885 and adopted the traditions and distinctive dress of the Scottish Highland regiments, including the Gordon tartan. Originally formed as a volunteer unit, it subsequently became part of the Union Defence Force’s Active Citizen Force in 1913. Its history includes service during the South African War, the First World War and the Second World War. The regiment remains part of the South African Army Reserve.
The button is manufactured in brass and measures approximately 25mm in diameter. It represents the regimental uniform insignia worn by members of the Cape Town Highlanders and is associated with the unit’s Scottish military heritage. The regiment’s insignia incorporates the Cross of St. Andrew, a central shield bearing a Scottish lion rampant and the distinctive hand-and-arrow crest. This button is an interesting addition to collections of South African military buttons, Scottish regimental insignia, Union Defence Force militaria and British Commonwealth uniform accessories.
