French Croix de Guerre 1914–1918 medal, original example of one of France’s most distinguished military decorations, awarded for acts of bravery and gallantry in the face of the enemy during the First World War.

Instituted on 2 April 1915, the Croix de Guerre 1914–1918 was created by the French Government to recognise members of the armed forces who had been mentioned in dispatches for acts of courage during wartime. Awarded to French servicemen as well as Allied military personnel, the decoration became one of the most respected gallantry awards of the First World War and was frequently bestowed upon British, Commonwealth, Belgian, American, and other Allied soldiers serving alongside French forces.

The medal consists of a bronze cross pattée with crossed swords between each arm, symbolising military service in combat. The obverse bears the effigy of the French Republic, while the reverse is dated 1914–1918, representing the final wartime issue produced following the conclusion of the conflict. It is suspended from the distinctive green ribbon with narrow red vertical stripes, one of the most recognisable ribbons of the First World War.

Recipients of the Croix de Guerre could receive additional ribbon devices to indicate the level at which they had been mentioned in dispatches. Bronze stars denoted brigade-level citations, silver stars represented divisional citations, gilt stars signified corps-level citations, and bronze or silver palms indicated citations at army level. These devices reflected repeated or higher-level recognition for gallantry under fire.

The Croix de Guerre was awarded during many of the war’s most significant campaigns, including the Battles of the Marne, Verdun, the Somme, Arras, Passchendaele, and the Hundred Days Offensive. Thousands of British and Commonwealth servicemen received the medal in recognition of distinguished service while fighting alongside French forces on the Western Front.

Original Croix de Guerre 1914–1918 medals remain highly sought after by collectors of First World War medals and militaria, valued for both their striking appearance and their association with individual acts of courage during one of history’s defining conflicts.

Good overall original condition, with crisp detailing and an attractive age-related bronze patina. The ribbon displays light wear consistent with age and service, while the medal shows minor surface marks from careful handling and long-term storage. No significant damage or repairs.
