South African Natal Royal Rifles (NRR) (1902–1913 pattern) button, original example of colonial military uniform insignia associated with the Natal Royal Rifles of Natal, South Africa. This pattern dates from the period following the Second Boer War and remained in use until the formation of the Union Defence Force in the years immediately preceding the First World War.

The button features the distinctive insignia of the Natal Royal Rifles in relief, incorporating the regiment’s initials and crown motif characteristic of British colonial military buttons of the Edwardian era. Manufactured in white metal, the design reflects the traditions of South African volunteer rifle regiments and the close influence of British military uniform styles.

Buttons of this type were worn on military tunics and other items of uniform by officers and enlisted personnel of the Natal Royal Rifles, serving both a practical purpose and as a visible indication of regimental identity. The 17mm size was typically used on the epaulettes and cuffs on uniform.

The Natal Royal Rifles formed part of the volunteer military forces of Natal and contributed to the defence of the colony during a period of significant political and military change in southern Africa. The 1902–1913 pattern represents the final years of the colonial military system before the establishment of the Union Defence Force following the creation of the Union of South Africa in 1910.

Manufactured in white metal with original shank fitting to the reverse, this example represents a classic piece of South African colonial military uniform insignia.
