The 5th Volunteer Battalion, Highland Light Infantry, known as the Glasgow Highlanders, was formed from Glasgow’s volunteer movement and developed a distinctive Highland identity within the Highland Light Infantry. The battalion wore Highland dress and maintained strong connections with Glasgow, becoming one of the best-known volunteer units associated with the regiment. Its traditions continued through subsequent reorganisations of the Territorial and Volunteer forces.
The buckle features the Victorian Crown, reflecting the period during which the Volunteer Battalion was established and developed its distinctive regimental identity. Chrome-plated buckles of this type are associated with later reproductions and modern manufacture rather than being Victorian-period originals.
