An original Imperial German M1849 Interim Artillery Officer’s parade sword, complete with brass scabbard. The M1849 was an interim pattern introduced during the mid-19th century, carried by artillery officers as a dress and parade sidearm. This example features a slightly curved, single-edged blade with a single fuller, etched with decorative motifs on both the blade and spine. The steel hilt has a simple knuckle bow hand guard, backstrap terminating in a stepped pommel, and a grip with wire-bound fishskin covering. The brass scabbard has twin suspension rings.
Unit marked “10. A. 1. 14.” (10th Artillery Regiment, 1st Battery). There are no other evident markings.
Condition
Acceptable. Blade etching is visible, with areas of patina and light wear consistent with age, but with several chips in the blade towards the tip. Grip covering is intact with fairly bad wear to the highlights, and the wire binding is loose. The steel hilt has some rust with some bad dents around the cross guard. The brass scabbard is complete, with small dents and surface wear and a split in the chape as well as a missing bolt and split in the throat.
Overall Length (out of scabbard): Approx. 94cm
Blade Length: Approx. 80cm
